Mic Drop Mini: How to Optimize Your Episode Titles
A great episode doesn’t matter if no one clicks to listen
You can have the best content in the world, but no one will ever hear it if your episode title doesn’t hook your listeners.
That is one of the brutal truths about podcasting.
And it’s the difference between a show that grows and one that stays invisible.
When I first started #Hashtags and Habits, I focused on making the content of the episodes great.
Powerful insights. Engaging, story-driven interviews. Actionable takeaways.
But the growth didn’t come the way I expected.
Why?
Because my episode titles were pretty forgettable.
So I experimented a bit and changed up the strategy.
I started using Apple Podcasts’ search function to uncover real keywords and started to write titles that were clear, curious, and click-worthy.
I added episode numbers so loyal listeners could keep track, and new listeners could easily binge.
And what do you know, one of our best-performing episodes turned out to be The #1 Underrated Superpower is Consistency.
It’s simple. It’s direct. It teases value. And it ranks extremely well.
If you want more listeners to find, click, and binge your podcast, here’s how to title your episodes like a pro:
3 Ways to Optimize Your Episode Titles
Start with Keyword Research
Don’t guess what your audience is searching for; find out.
Before I title an episode, I spend a few minutes inside Apple Podcasts, simply typing words related to my topic into the search bar. Just like Google, it auto-suggests what listeners are already searching. That’s gold.
Pair this with a tool like ListenNotes, and you can reverse-engineer the language of top-performing podcasts in your niche.
Why does this matter?
Because podcast players are search engines, too, if your title doesn’t match the search behavior of your ideal listener, you’re not just missing clicks — you’re missing discoverability.
Your title is metadata.
Keyword-aligned titles rank higher in podcast directories, improve visibility, and help new listeners find you without ads or promos.
Your episode title is your headline. Don’t waste it.
Be Clear + Catchy
You have less than 3 seconds to win the scroll. That means (unless your audience is already used to this as part of your brand):
No cryptic titles.
No inside jokes.
No clever wordplay that only makes sense after listening.
If your audience has to think twice, they’ll move on.
Instead, lead with clarity: Tell them what the episode is about, who it’s for, and what transformation or insight they’ll gain.
Then add just enough intrigue to spark curiosity. A simple twist. A strong adjective. A number. A bold claim. For example:
❌ Let’s Talk About Habits
✅ The #1 Habit That Tripled My Revenue in 90 Days
One blends in. The other commands attention.
Remember: you’re not writing for yourself. You’re writing for the busy, distracted person scrolling through a sea of content.
Make them stop. Make them click.
Include Episode Numbers
This might seem like a small thing, but it’s a big signal to your listeners (and to platforms).
Adding episode numbers to your titles creates:
Structure: It lets new listeners know there’s an intentional flow, like a course or collection.
Binge Behavior: Like Netflix, numbered episodes encourage people to return to earlier content and “catch up.”
Trust: It shows consistency. Listeners are likelier to subscribe when they see you’ve built something with longevity.
Example:
✅ Ep. 12 – The Silent Killer of Podcast Growth: Inconsistent Messaging
✅ S3: E12 – The Silent Killer of Podcast Growth: Inconsistent Messaging
Versus:
❌ The Silent Killer of Podcast Growth: Inconsistent Messaging
The first builds context. The second is forgettable.
Pro tip: Add the episode number after the main value statement so that it doesn’t interrupt the headline hook.
